WHO/World Bank Launching Its First World Report on Disability

September 12, 2011 to September 13, 2011

The World report on disability includes the first updated prevalence estimates for disability since the 1970s, and reviews the factors that affect disability trends such as ageing and noncommunicable diseases. The Report also compiles and analyses the way countries have developed policies and the responses to address the needs of people with disabilities, increasing access to and utilization of evidence-based research.

This World report on disability will contribute to the implementation of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), which came into force in May 2008 and was signed by President Obama on July 30 2009.  The CRPD represents a paradigm shift, focusing attention on how the lives of people with disabilities are made more difficult by social barriers. Thus, the Report explores how physical, attitudinal and systemic barriers hinder participation of persons with disabilities in fields such as health, transport, education and employment, and provides information on what works to improve inclusion and participation.
