People with Disabilities Do Everything: da Vinci Awardee Promotes the Possible
Tags:Innovators, NewsSouthfield, MI – September 6, 2007 – People with disabilities do everything! That’s the message Roger McCarville is talking about on his national show, Disabilities Today, a weekly television program airing the issues faced by the disabled. Roger is the host and co-producer. He is also one of the honorees of the 2007 da Vinci Awards® and will receive the da Vinci “Founder’s Award,” bestowed by Michael Rokosz, da Vinci Awards founder. The Founder’s Award recognizes people who significantly increase public awareness of assistive technology and accessibility issues.
Presenting sponsor, General Motors, Leadership Chair and OnStar President Chet Huber and the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Michigan Chapter are proud of their involvement with the 2007 da Vinci Awards, now in its seventh year of saluting outstanding individuals and technologies that help people with mobility impairment.
McCarville knows the challenges of the disabled first hand. In a 1975 boating accident, he lost both legs. One leg was reattached and for the other Roger uses a prosthesis.
The idea for Disabilities Today was born about 12 years ago when Roger McCarville was featured on a Michigan hunting and fishing show talking about how people with disabilities could join the fun. “Now we travel the world covering issues and events that involve people with any type of disability.” Roger continues,”We bring the show into people’s living rooms and take away the mystique of the disability. We feature organizations such as the Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan who get people to dream.” Roger is passionate about his message and exclaims: “You don’t have to stay home if you don’t want to!” Disabilities Today airs weekly on national PBS.

Roger mentions, “My sister had MS and passed away. The National Multiple Sclerosis Society is doing wonders in the field of research, benefiting people with various types and causes of disability, and I feel extremely humble to be named the da Vinci Awards’ Founder’s Award winner by the National MS Society.”
The 2007 da Vinci Awards will be presented at a gala event Friday, September 28, at The Ritz-Carlton Hotel, Dearborn, MI, featuring a cocktail reception, gourmet dinner and awards program. Funds raised through these awards support the National MS Society in their continuing efforts to aid those affected by multiple sclerosis. Sponsorships and individual contributions are welcome. For details, please contact the National MS Society at 248-936-0349 or visit www.davinciawards.com.
MS stops people from moving. The National MS Society exists to make sure it doesn’t. We help each person address the challenges of living with MS through our 50 state network chapters. Proceeds from the da Vinci Awards have totaled more than $1.7 million and benefit the National MS Society Michigan Chapter. The Society is dedicated to achieving a world free of MS. We are people who want to do something about MS now. Join the movement at www.nationalmssociety.org.
